gruelling Comrades Marathon for the second time on Sunday, June 9. Elias Masilela (49), also MMC for finance, completed this year’s 85.91km up run from Durban to Pietermaritzburg in 11 hours and 33 minutes.
He made this remarkable accomplishment as a testament to his unwavering dedication and hard work, both in the political arena and on the race track. He shared his experience of participating in both the down run and up run of the race. “I prefer the up run because I find it more enjoyable compared to the down run,” he said.
Masilela also said that one of the most inspiring aspects of his achievement is his belief that age is merely a number when it comes to the race aptly called the ultimate human race. “Let me say my dedication to maintaining physical and mental fitness defies any preconceived notions about age limitations. I think this serves as an inspiration to individuals of all ages who aspire to take on similar challenges,” he said.
Last year, Masilela completed a down run, from Pietermaritzburg to Durban, within 11 hours and 15 minutes. He said his success in completing the race for the second time is a testament to his exceptional work ethic, perseverance, and indomitable spirit. His ability to excel in both his political career and as an accomplished long-distance runner exemplifies the multifaceted nature of his character.
As he continues to make strides in his political endeavours and athletic pursuits, he stands as a shining example of what can be achieved through unwavering dedication and a relentless pursuit of personal excellence. His resilience, determination, and unwavering commitment to success make him a true champion both on the race track and in the political arena.
“I guess the ability to balance political responsibilities with a passion for long-distance running speaks volumes about my determination and resilience,” Masilela concluded.
