SOUTH AFRICA – As the cornerstone of democracy, elections play a vital role in shaping the nation’s future. The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) stands as a beacon of transparency, responsiveness, integrity, accountability, and impartiality, ensuring that every citizen has the opportunity to participate in the democratic process of voting.

One important aspect of the electoral process is special voting. Special votes are designed to accommodate individuals who cannot vote at their designated voting stations on election day due to reasons such as physical disability, illness, pregnancy, incarceration, and other circumstances.

The special voting process is set to take place on May 27 and 28, preceding the main voting day on May 29, with a total of 1,668,076 approved special vote applications. Eligible voters had the opportunity to apply for special voting through online applications or by visiting local IEC offices, which closed on May 3, 2024.

According to electoral officer Sy Mamabolo, a total of 624,593 voters will be visited at their homes, while 1,043,483 will vote at registered voting stations. Mamabolo stated that they are prepared for special votes. “Our staff is ready and will be present at all voting stations, as well as visiting the homes of those unable to visit voting stations, to ensure that all those granted special votes have a smooth voting experience,” he said.

As South Africa gears up for the upcoming election, the IEC’s commitment to inclusivity and transparency remains steadfast, ensuring that every voice is heard in shaping the country’s future.
