DELMAS – The Vukuzenzele Sports Ground came alive over the weekend as it hosted a Top 8 tournament, where local football teams went head to head in a display of talent.
The two-day tournament, held from June 21 to 22, 2025, featured a series of intense matches that culminated in an exciting final.
The quarter-finals kicked off with a dramatic clash between Sihappy and Sharpshooters, with the match ending 2-2 after full time. Sharpshooters triumphed 5-4 in a tense penalty shootout. Meanwhile, Botleng United secured their place in the semi-finals with a solid 2-1 win over Young Gunz, while Mndeni FC edged out Barcelona in a close 3-2 encounter. The quarter-final match between Abracadabra and Arsenal also ended in a 2-2 draw, setting the stage for an exciting semi-final round.
In the semi-finals, Mndeni FC continued their impressive form, drawing 2-2 again with Sharpshooters before winning 5-4 on penalties. Botleng United also advanced to the final with a convincing 2-0 victory over Arsenal, showing strength and teamwork.
The final was a thrilling showdown between Mndeni FC and Botleng United. The teams battled fiercely, finishing regular time at 2-2. In a dramatic penalty shootout, Mndeni FC prevailed 5-4 to claim the tournament title.
Dumisani Sibiya, affectionately known as Skitom, assistant coach of Mndeni FC, expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance despite challenges faced. “I’m 100% happy with the team’s performance. The tournament was good even though we lost a few matches. I want to thank the organisers for a great tournament,” he said. He also highlighted the importance of these matches as preparation for the upcoming ABC Motsepe Playoffs scheduled for July 12 and 13 at Lynville Stadium in Witbank.
Sylvester Masilela, popularly known as “Babsie,” coach of Botleng United, praised his players for their efforts throughout the tournament. “I’m pleased with our overall performance and the results we’ve achieved. Well done to everyone for the effort and commitment shown,” he remarked. However, he acknowledged the need to strengthen the squad for future challenges. “This will help us avoid relying on penalties, especially when facing tougher opponents,” he added.
The tournament was organised by the Vukuzenzele Youth Activism NPC, highlighting its commitment to reviving local football and providing positive activities for youth. Nkosivumile Andries Mahlangu commented on the importance of the tournament, stating, “VYA NPC is proud to offer social events like the Top 8 as we seek to keep youth proactive outside school premises.”
Teams, each paying an entry fee of R700, competed for a grand prize of R5 000, with Mndeni FC emerging as champions.
Standout player Mncedisi scored two crucial goals in the final, while Botleng United’s Calvin impressed in the semi-finals with a hat-trick, helping his team reach the final.
