Women leading Mpumalanga tourism sector unite to push for more inclusivity

Mbombela— Mpumalanga women from across the tourism sector gathered at Hotel 247 in White River on 20 August under the banner of ‘Women in Tourism’.

From local entrepreneurs to government representatives, the room brimmed with purpose. Each person stood shoulder to shoulder, united under a shared mission: to uplift one another and build a stronger, more inclusive future for women in tourism.

Among those present was Princess Eurika Mogane, a commissioner at the Commission for Gender Equality, whose presence commanded respect and admiration. Though royal by birth, Mogane’s true distinction lies in leading with conviction and service.

As a commissioner, she carries her title not as a privilege, but as a responsibility to her people. “As a commissioner, my statement for today will be that all the data that you have drafted, the concerns you have, please be forwarded to my office,” she urged.

Her message was clear that women must not only voice their struggles but turn them into action. Dudu Khoza, owner of Dakarai Guesthouse in Thulamahashe, spoke of her journey from a six-room start to a thriving fifteen-room establishment. Her testimony was not just about business growth, but about the power of faith, mentorship and relationships.

She urged women to build sisterhood, push for recognition and advocate for policies that nurture their growth. “We must inspire one another,” she said, her words lighting a spark of unity across the room.

From Hazyview, Nozipho Ndzukula, founder of INozi Africa Tours, shared her journey of transforming a modest transport service into a reputable tourism business, linking visitors with Africa’s hidden gems.

For Ndzukula, collaboration is the lifeline of her business. “This event reminded me how much we need each other in this industry. I am truly thankful because without partnerships, businesses like mine cannot survive — let’s support each other so we can all grow together,” she said.

Keynote speaker Oupa Pilane, a respected voice in tourism, said: “Tourism needs fighters. Women must rise, we need you. Speak up and claim your space in this industry. I can’t be the only one voicing out. You are not just participants, you are leaders, activists and change-makers.”

But the day wasn’t only about inspiration, it was also about solutions. Organisations offering mentorship, funding and training took the stage, equipping women with tools to strengthen and expand their businesses. Each presentation echoed a shared message: you are not alone; support is here.

For too long, many women had been fighting their battles in silence, isolated in their own struggles. However, the event reminded them that solidarity and persistence are the most powerful currencies they possess.
