EMALAHLENI – The Emalahleni municipality is currently without a mayor following the resignation of Leah Mabuza.

Mabuza, who tendered her resignation as Emalahleni executive mayor on Monday, July 1, was sworn in as a member of the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature. She and Thabile Masondo, who has been a Member of Parliament since 2019, were two ANC members sworn in on Tuesday, July 2.

Mabuza replaces long-serving member of the legislature and former MEC for the Department of Community Safety, Security, and Liaison, Vusi Shongwe, while Masondo replaces former premier Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane, now Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP).

Mabuza became executive mayor in June last year after the ANC recalled Connie Nkalitshana over “instability” at the municipality. The ANC in Nkangala has confirmed receiving Mabuza’s resignation letter and assured residents that a replacement will be found soon.

The party informed the publication that it has recommended three names to the Provincial Executive Committee for approval. “The Regional Executive Committee has identified three names that will be sent to the province for approval based on their qualifications and experience,” said Linkie Mohlala, media officer.

Mohlala also played her cards very close to her chest regarding who the three candidates are. “These names, which unfortunately cannot be revealed to the Highveld Chronicle, will then be sent to the National Executive Committee panel for interviews.”

The current council speaker will be in charge until a new mayor is elected.
