EMALAHLENI – At the SOD Turning Ceremony for Ferrobank ward 10’s new Fire Station on April 15 in Emalahleni, Mayor Leah Mabuza emphasized the need for local job opportunities in the construction project. This fire station, one of three in Emalahleni, joins those already in Ga-Nala and Phola-Ogies. The event saw the attendance of dignitaries, including Glencore officials, Emalahleni’s Municipal Manager, Sizwe Mayisela, and community members.
Mabuza’s plea for local employment aims to prevent potential disruptions and maintain community harmony during construction, slated for completion in twelve months.
“This project belongs to Emalahleni; it’s in ward 10 but serves the broader community. I urge the contractor to offer opportunities to locals to reduce tensions and prevent halts due to disagreements,” Mabuza stated. She acknowledged that the previous 30% local hiring policy no longer applies but emphasized the need for generosity in hiring practices.
She also praised Glencore for involving local businesses, countering claims that mines neglect Emalahleni communities. “I’m pleased that local companies benefit from Glencore’s construction efforts, addressing concerns about mines’ community involvement,” Mabuza noted.
She expressed hope that local youth and women would get a fair chance at participation, fostering a sense of community ownership. “The construction is now fully handed over to Glencore,” she added.
The fire station aims to enhance disaster relief and emergency services in Emalahleni’s Western community. “We’re privileged to have a caring corporate citizen like Glencore,” Mabuza said, praising Glencore’s water supply efforts in Phola-Ogies.
Glencore’s Noel Pillay highlighted the project’s transformative impact on Ferrobank’s KwaGuqa. “ This facility will ensure the safety and wellbeing of the community will be prioritised and communities will rescued during fire emergencies,” he concluded.
