MPUMALANGA – The Mpumalanga 2024 matric class has performed above the set target.
With the 83% target set, the 2024 matriculants registered an overall pass rate of 84.99%, marking a 1.99% increase from the 79.99% achieved in 2023.
Overjoyed Education MEC Cathy Dlamini couldn’t contain her excitement. “It is encouraging that the 2024 Grade 12 class in Mpumalanga province exceeded the target,” she said at the official announcement ceremony held at the Banquet Hall in Middelburg on Tuesday, January 14.
The province registered 66,936 candidates, and 64,201 wrote all the subjects on offer.
“This means that out of the 64,201 candidates who sat for the National Senior Certificate, 54,567 passed,” said the MEC.
“This is encouraging and is a good story to tell. Congratulations are in order, to all those who contributed to this outcome.”
Dlamini also announced that 27,885 candidates passed with Bachelor’s passes, and 17,775 qualify to enrol for diploma programmes.
Ehlanzeni became the overall best performing district, as it recorded an impressive 88.43% pass rate, up from 81.8% in 2023.
Gert Sibande followed with an 87.67% pass rate, compared to the 79.8% pass rate in 2023, while Nkangala and Bohlabela registered 85.24% and 78.6%, respectively.
Nkangala’s results showed an 8.8% improvement from the 76.45% obtained in 2023, while Bohlabela improved by 9.5% from 69.1%.
Steve Tshwete municipality, out of the 17 municipalities, obtained the top position after 2,449 learners passed, constituting a 92.9% pass rate.
The municipality managed to defend the trophy it obtained last year when it was announced the overall best performing municipality after it registered an 89.5% pass rate.
Mayor Mhlonishwa Masilela expressed his delight that his municipality defended the number one position in the province. “These are the good results coming from the hard work of teachers, learners, parents, school governing bodies, and everyone that supported these children. We want to say let’s continue the good work that puts us at number one in the province,” he said.
Out of the 575 schools that took part in the 2024 matric exams, 58 were able to record a 100% pass rate.
