DELMAS – The Department of Social Development’s NPO Roadshow kicked off on 19 September at the Extension 3 Community Hall, bringing together registered non-profit organisations (NPOs) and key stakeholders. The event aims to support and empower NPOs through informative presentations, knowledge sharing, and networking opportunities.

One of the representatives from SARS explained how NPOs can register with the revenue service, stating, “An organisation that has registered as a Non-Profit Organisation (NPO) with the DSD NPO Directorate, or as a Non-Profit Company (NPC) with CIPC, does not automatically qualify for preferential tax treatment and needs to apply for exemption with SARS.”

The event featured presentations from esteemed stakeholders, including the Department of Labour, National NPO Directorate, Department of Home Affairs, National Lotteries Commission, SARS, the Office of the Premier, and the Integrity Management and Forensic Auditing Unit. Topics covered included registration and compliance requirements, funding opportunities, and best practices in governance and accountability.

NPO representatives welcomed the initiative, citing the need for clarity on regulatory frameworks and access to resources. From the National Lotteries Commission, Specialist Regulatory and Enforcement Officer Johannes Nkutshweu highlighted how the NLC assists NPOs in generating income. “We help NPOs raise funds through the Society Lottery, but they need to be registered to apply. After that, they can raise money through the Society Lottery,” he explained. “They can even use a raffle format, selling tickets for a chance to win household essentials.”

Attendees praised the event’s interactive format, which allowed for meaningful engagement and Q&A sessions. The NPO Roadshow is part of the Department’s broader strategy to enhance the credibility and effectiveness of registered NPOs.

Nokuthula Duma, Senior NPO Officer, elaborated on the amendments to the NPO Act: “This Act was amended following concerns about money laundering in the sector. We discovered that donations and grants were being channelled out of the country, which necessitated stricter regulations.”

As the non-profit sector continues to play a critical role in addressing social and economic challenges, initiatives like the NPO Roadshow are vital. By fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing, the Department of Social Development is empowering NPOs and driving positive change. With over 40 NPOs in attendance, the event marks a significant milestone in strengthening the sector.
